Religious Education

Religious Education is the first learning area in a Catholic School and its curriculum is mandated by the Bishops of Western Australia.

All students in Catholic schools in Western Australia are required to learn Religious Education from K-12.

Religious Education is central to the curriculum in Catholic schools and is mandated by the Bishops of Western Australia. At Emmaus Catholic Primary School, all students from Kindergarten to Year 12 are required to participate in Religious Education, which forms a vital part of their learning journey.

The Religious Education curriculum is modeled on the Western Australian Curriculum set by the School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA). Like other learning areas, it outlines the knowledge, understanding, skills, values, and attitudes students are expected to develop and provides clear guidelines for assessing their progress.

Religious Education is at the nucleus of the school’s existence. In accordance with Catholic Education Office of Western Australia (CEWA) policy, our teachers gain accreditation through the CEWA to teach Religious Education.

The CEWA Guidelines for Religious Education states that in all Catholic school, Religious Education should be seen as the first Learning Area and opportunities for integration within other subjects is encouraged. Religious Education lessons occur each day and is a mandated curriculum area within Catholic schools (includes instruction to non-Catholics). Incorporated within the lessons, and in addition to them, the children are exposed to a wide spectrum of Catholic practices including:

  • The learning of formal and informal prayers
  • Personal conscience and faith response
  • Daily classroom prayer
  • Sacramental preparation: Reconciliation, Eucharist and Confirmation
  • Preparation and participation in liturgies
  • Celebrations for special feast days
  • Participation in school-based and community celebrations
  • Mass, Sacramental and Liturgical celebrations
  • Community Liturgy celebrations
  • Celebrating Mary, Mother of Jesus
  • Celebrating Saints
  • Practical support for Missions
  • Pastoral care learning.

At Emmaus, we are committed to delivering a quality education that fosters the holistic growth and development of our students. As a Catholic community, we also focus on nurturing their faith, deepening their understanding of Christ, and creating opportunities for spiritual connection through the sacramental life of the Church.

Masses and liturgies are celebrated regularly both at school and at St Helena of the Holy Cross Church. Parents are warmly invited to join these special events, which are integral to our faith community. Celebration dates will be shared via class memos, the School Newsletter, and Term Planners.
