Djeran

Autumn

(April to May)

Season of Cooling and Change

Djeran brings a welcome change to Dayton, with cooler air, softer sunlight, and the first signs of seasonal transition. It is a time when winds shift and the environment begins to prepare for wetter months ahead.

In our garden, plants such as Native Thyme, Maroon Bush, and Rivermint flourish. These species highlight the importance of aromatic and medicinal plants, connecting students to traditional uses of leaves for healing, cooking, and wellbeing.

In the Yarning Circle, Djeran is a time to talk about change and preparation. Students might reflect on seasonal shifts, explore plant smells and textures, or share stories about how families prepare for cooler weather. Activities could include sensory exploration or creating simple bush herb bundles.

Across all six Noongar seasons, our Yarning Circle and Bush Tucker garden connect students to Country, culture, and sustainability. This project continues to grow as a living classroom—supporting hands-on learning, respect for First Nations knowledge, and a deeper understanding of our school community’s environment.
