Makuru

Winter

(June to July)

Season of Rain, Cold, and Renewal

Makuru is the coldest and wettest season in Dayton, bringing nourishing rains that refill waterways and support new life. Traditionally, this was a time of shelter, storytelling, and connecting closely with family and community.

Our Bush Tucker space reflects Makuru through hardy, aromatic plants like Lemon Myrtle, Cinnamon Myrtle, and Native Oregano. These plants are well-suited to cooler conditions and can be used in warming teas and foods, helping students understand how plants support health in different seasons.

The Yarning Circle becomes especially meaningful during Makuru as a place for storytelling and connection. Students can gather to share stories, reflect on the importance of rain, and observe how the garden changes with the weather. Activities might include listening to rain, journaling observations, or discussing how living things stay warm.

Across all six Noongar seasons, our Yarning Circle and Bush Tucker garden connect students to Country, culture, and sustainability. This project continues to grow as a living classroom—supporting hands-on learning, respect for First Nations knowledge, and a deeper understanding of our school community’s environment.
